WHAT IS VOX?

Vox is a fun way to teach people about the importance of speaking out and voting on the issues of reproductive rights. We have raised awareness in Kalamazoo through events like the Ani DeFranco concerts at the State Theater, Pro-Choice Rallies in Bronson Park, an annual Feminist Poetry Slam, Steal This Movie (a benefit screening of the story of 1960's activist Abbie Hoffman), a Beer Tasting Party, Bronco Bash, Lunafest, and just talking with friends at parties.

Vox seeks to educate those born after 1973 about the threats to choice and availability of contraceptives. We mobilize people to stop these threats and support reproductive rights. This age group has the most to lose when anti-choice politicians are elected to help political religious extremists achieve their goal of outlawing abortion and birth control.

• The Michigan Legislature has introduced over hundreds of anti-choice bills. Research to see what freedoms have been eliminated for Michigan Women.
• The US and State legislature are working to pass laws that allow pharmacists to refuse to fill your prescriptions for birth control pills and EC.
• Bush as declared a War on Women. The biggest threat to our reproductive freedom is the appointment of anti-choice judges to the lower courts. At the Supreme Court level, Bush has appointed two and there is now an anti choice majority. Abortion is likely to become illegal again. And YES — this CAN HAPPEN! Don't be fooled into thinking it can't!
• The President has also ordered a "safety review" of the FDA approved RU-486. An early option medication abortion for women.
• In a majority of states, health insurance companies that cover prescription drugs (Viagra) are not required to provide equal coverage for prescription contraceptive drugs.
• Each year, the US government spends $50 million on "abstinence-only" sex education, yet there is no federally funded program for comprehensive sexuality education in this country even though the Surgeon General has determined that abstinence only programs don't work!

• Because half of all pregnancies in the US are unintended.
• Because the US has the highest rates of teen pregnancy, teen birth, and teen abortion in the Western world.
• Because worldwide a woman dies from pregnancy-related causes every minute.
